An N Gauge layout bringing back memories of holidays by the sea
Dimmal Harbour is the second N Gauge layout I have put togther since our grandchilden were born. Dimmal Harbour follows on from Dimmal Lane, a layout around two walls of our lounge at head height to prevent our cat Lola from hunting and killing the train shaped mice that ran round.
The decision to make a new layout in our son's old bedroom was made to allow trains to run around in a loop rather than simply end to end, primarily to add more interest for younger viewers, although I must admit there is something very satisfying in seeing trains just run round.
In common with both my previous layouts, everything is just pinned down - nothing is glued. This allows me to change my mind an infinite number of times without damaging anything. I simply use dress makers pins direct into the foam boards and then hide the pin heads with buildings, shrubs etc. This method has the added bonus of going together very fast.
Started in February 2012, the major features of the layout are now probably about 40% complete, with many buildings temporary stand-ins that were left over from the original layout I put togther when our own kids were young.

Viaduct from the superb range of card kits from Rick at www.ngaugecardkits.co.uk
Rolling StockLocomotives are now mainly small British Railways tank engines from both Graham Farish and Dapol.
Carriages are all Farish models as are the vast majority of the goods trucks and vans. |
StructuresSome of the more specific buildings such as the windmill are ready to use models from Hornby or Graham Farish.
However, most of the other buildings are card kits assembled or modified by my wife Lynn. The buildings that make up most of the town area are from Rick at www.ngaugecardkits.co.uk whereas most of the structures in the shed area are from the Metcalfe range. |
